Thanksgiving 2009

This is a picture I snapped with my BlackBerry this morning in Dana Point before Rich and I did our traditional Thanksgiving beach walk. If you look closely, you can see Catalina Island in the distance! The temperature was a toasty 85ish!
For years while Rich's career took shape I desperately wanted to return to California, land of my childhood. My prayers were answered 13 years ago when Rich was offered a position with a new company out here. It is one of the very many, many things I am thankful for. We are very blessed.
+++Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.+++ Colossians 3:15

I love November. Why? Well, it is the month of my birthday. It's the month of Rich's birthday (he is one year and 2 days older than I!). It is a time to prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas, two of my absolute favorite times of the year. For me, these holidays are all about what is Really Important. I am proud to be a Christian.
Of course, I also really love all the decorating that will happen, not to mention the baking! This year, I will focus more on the decorating and less on the baking, however! Any baking I do needs to be beautifully packaged up and given away.
I am anxious for our SoCal weather to get cooler. We don't really have fall until December around here and the heat gets....well, boring after a while. Not that I am complaining, having lived in 7 different states with all types of climates going on! But a crisp, cool, fall day with leaves changing color and falling around me as I walk outside (note...NOT on a treadmill) is definitely in order about now. :)

Design on a Dime

BIGGEST UPDATE:  This bathroom was renovated in 2012.  The blog post describing and documenting the renovation is here:

I was SO excited to have a comment on my Facebook page from the famous Kristan Cunningham of HGTV's Design on a Dime and designer for the Rachel Ray show. I had been struggling with my 1970s bathroom, unsure of how to update it without spending $20,000 to completely gut and remodel it, but for about $750 I went to work at it with paint, a lot of elbow grease, grout, new towels, a new area rug and a new shower door. I even bought two small valances for the windows for a song by searching "toile valances" on ebay. It is not a dream bathroom, but a big improvement. I took some of my old tarnished silver pieces and polished them up and voila! See what you think!

Updated note!  I apologize for the poor quality of photos in this post which was done before purchasing a decent camera.  If you click my header above, you will hopefully see an improvement in the blog and photo quality.  This bathroom will be remodeled hopefully in 2012!  Stay tuned.  :)

There is only so much one can do with "harvest gold" tile, but I am happy with how it turned out! :)

UPDATE:  here is my new master bath inspiration:

I have chosen some new tile and I am excited to begin transforming this space!  Hopefully I will be posting on a new and improved bathroom by summer!  :D

A Writer Writes

So here we go! It has been forever since I have updated this blog. The past several months have been filled with life's ups and downs....several downs, but I am in a good place right now (although there is a little extra of me).

I am stealing the Simple Woman's Daybook idea from MaryBeth Whalen simply to get myself started here. Here goes:

Outside my window... A blistering hot day. The AC unit in the backyard is blowing the honeysuckle covering it's little wooden enclosure thing.

From the learning rooms...My own growth is taking precedence over the kids' right now since they are entrenched in summer break. I am finishing up a Women's Bible Study on Virtue that has spoken to my heart. It will be over in another week and I have to admit I'd like it to continue forever!

I am thankful for... some time to myself on the days Jay sees his tutor
From the kitchen...Dinner tonight will be salad, grilled buffalo burgers (without buns), broccoli, and rice. Plus a hard boiled egg or two for my vegetarian son who won't go near anything called a burger.

I am wearing...jeans, sandals, and a very cute shirt I bought for $4.80 at a HUGE sale. Plus a Cookie Lee necklace. :)

I am of those Stephanie Plum mysteries, after just finishing Confessions of a Shopaholic. I NEVER read fiction, but have managed to read at least 7 novels this summer....very unlike me. :)

I am praying...for my husband and kids daily.

Around the house...the afternoons seem wonderfully quiet. I have been organizing closets and financial papers since I have time off of work right now.

One of my favorite, always, coffee. :)

A few plans for the rest of the tonight, a movie with my pal Barb tomorrow night, volunteer shift at Stephen's swim meet Saturday (plus pilates and church), and Sunday I would like to talk hubby into some serious gardening in the backyard with me!
That's it for now!
